The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has proposed Parliament to consider amending the current law to facilitate the scheduling of parliamentary elections before the upcoming Ramadan period.
The request comes as the timing of next year’s parliamentary elections coincides with the last 10 days of Ramadan.
During a session with the Independent Institutions Committee of Parliament, the Vice Chairman of the ECM, Ismail Habeeb, highlighted that the term of the members of the 19th Parliament is set to expire on May 28. He informed the committee that the parliamentary election is scheduled for March 19, with mock examinations currently taking place in schools.
To accommodate the election process, the ECM is utilising school halls as polling stations. Consequently, Habeeb noted that the election should be scheduled after the examination period. The earliest possible date for the election, according to Habeeb, is March 30, which falls on the 20th day of Ramadan.
Habeeb emphasised the potential challenges associated with holding the election during Ramadan, particularly in its final 10 days. He cited difficulties in recruiting and training officials, as well as other Election Commission activities and candidate campaigning.
To address these challenges, the ECM proposed two potential solutions. The first option involves shortening the 30-day campaign period for candidates to 20 days, enabling the election to take place on March 9, two days before the commencement of Ramadan. The second option suggests extending the statutory 120-day period, allowing an earlier start to the election process.
The Committee on Independent Institutions will deliberate on these proposals following further consultations with various stakeholders. The decision will shape the course of parliamentary elections and ensure they align with the practical considerations of the Ramadan period.
