I am currently abroad for medical treatment & after that, I will return to my beloved country, where I will live, work & be buried in the soil of Maldives, where I belong, Inshah Allah ! https://t.co/m1eZq3Cp2n
Adeeb, convicted in connection to the MMPRC graft scandal, left for Singapore on November 17 following a pardon by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Contrary to speculations, Adeeb clarified in a post on X today that he is currently abroad for medical treatment and plans to return to the Maldives after the necessary medical procedures.
The Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), Adeeb’s party, revealed that he underwent surgery in Singapore in July due to a serious neurological condition believed to be linked to complications from three years of solitary confinement between 2015 and 2018.
Formerly a key figure in the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Adeeb received a 20-year prison sentence in October 2020. Despite the conviction, Adeeb had been under home confinement since 2020 on medical grounds.
Solih’s decision to grant presidential pardons to Adeeb and Ziyath raised concerns from rights watchdogs, including Transparency Maldives and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
