Azima Secures PPM-PNC Ticket for Male’ Mayoral By-Election
Azima Shakoor, a former attorney general, has been officially confirmed as the candidate for the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition in the upcoming Male’ mayoral by-election.
Azima submitted her candidacy form for the PPM-PNC primary to PNC’s chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) last night.
In a statement to reporters after the confirmation, Azima expressed her commitment to public service and emphasised the need for collaboration between the mayor and the government.
She noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has made significant commitments to the residents of Male’ and believes that it is the right time for a mayor who can work in tandem with the government to address the city’s challenges.
The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant when Dr. Muizzu resigned to assume the office of the Maldivian president in November.
Candidacy for the by-election remains open until December 13, as announced by the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). The Male’ city council by-elections are scheduled to take place on January 13.
