Provision of Waste Management Equipment to 45 Islands in Several Atolls

Lucky Global Projects Pvt Ltd, an Indian company, has secured the contract to supply waste management equipment to 45 islands across Noonu, Raa, Baa, and Lhaviyani Atoll.

The signing ceremony, which took place today, saw the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim representing the Ministry of Environment formalising the agreement. The award of this project falls under the Maldives Clean Environment Project, currently being executed with grant assistance from the World Bank.

Under the terms of the agreement, 45 islands in Noonu, Raa, Baa, and Lhaviyani  Atolls will receive waste management equipment at the island level. The provided equipment encompasses a multi-purpose mini baler, single-feed glass bottle crusher, strapping tool, hand truck trolley, and hydraulic hand pallet truck.

Scheduled for completion within four months, the initiative aims to enhance waste management capabilities across the specified atolls.

Minister Thoriq, emphasised the significance of the project for the Maldives during the signing ceremony. He stated that this initiative holds priority in the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s 14-week agenda, underlining its role in the nation’s environmental objectives.

Acknowledging the collective effort required for successful environmental projects, Minister Thoriq called upon all Maldivian citizens to collaborate in achieving these goals.

The selected islands for equipment provision are those already equipped with a waste and resource management center, undergoing establishment or upgrade of such facilities, or in the procurement phase. 

The project, outlined in today’s agreement, will contribute to the systematic transportation of waste to the waste and resource management center, increasing its capacity to process metal, plastic, and paper efficiently. Moreover, it will open avenues for the repurposing of waste materials such as glass bottles.
