Gover’t Announces Funding for Four Compulsory Subjects in O Level Examination

MV+ News Desk | December 12, 2023

In a recent development, the government has declared its commitment to cover the expenses of four mandatory subjects for students undertaking the O Level examination regardless of mock examination results.

Previously, financial support from the government was extended to those who successfully passed the O Level mock examination. However, students failing to meet the requirements in the compulsory subjects were obliged to bear the costs of the A/L examination themselves.

Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, in a circular, outlined that students completing grade 10 in the four prescribed subjects—namely Islam, Dhivehi, Mathematics, and English—will now be mandated to participate in these subjects, with the government covering associated expenses.

The circular clarified that, beyond the four mandatory subjects, fees for additional examination subjects will be covered in accordance with Ministry Circular No. 03/2008.

It further specified that students are expected to partake in a total of five subjects, including the four compulsory ones. For B.Tech stream students, the examinations will encompass Islam, Dhivehi, English, Mathematics, and additional B.Tech stream subjects.

Decisions regarding students identified under the inclusive teaching method will be made through consultation with the ministry.

The ministry emphasized that this change aims to ensure that every graduating student in the country attains the requisite level of educational accomplishment. Recent data from the ministry indicates an improvement in the number of students passing compulsory subjects, albeit a decline in those passing all five subjects.
