Gov’t Postpones Rent Payments for Police and Military Flats by One Year
The government has announced the deferment of rent payments for police and military flats for a duration of one year. The decision was revealed by Presidential Undersecretary for Public Policy Mohamed Firzul during a press conference held at the Presidential Office, last Thursday.
Firzul highlighted that the government has chosen to delay the repayment of two treasury loans associated with army and police flats, emphasizing that no interest will be accrued during this period. Furthermore, a restructuring of the loan terms will occur after a one-year grace period is granted. The decision awaits official confirmation from the Finance Ministry, with Mohammed Muizzu overseeing the process.
Following this development, Firzul confirmed that rent payments for both police and army flats will be deferred for one year, with no interest charges during this period.
Providing context to the situation, it was noted that the construction of police flats commenced in 2013, while army flats were transferred to Noomadi a year later. However, the original project by Numadi was left incomplete, leading to its takeover by a company named Island Experts. Subsequently, the police flat project was reassigned to Amin Construction Company by the previous government, while the army flats were contracted to China’s The Twenty-Third Metallurgical Construction Group.
As of now, only the army flats have been successfully completed. Soldiers have initiated the handover process, delivering keys upon the completion of assigned tasks by the Chinese company. On the other hand, police flats are still undergoing finishing work, yet keys are being gradually handed over as the construction progresses.
