The Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Parliamentary Group defended the decision of the MDP-controlled Parliamentary Committee to increase salaries across all three branches of government, including parliament members, in a press conference held yesterday.

The Committee also endorsed salary increases for the President, Vice-President, Ministers, and various senior positions within the state.

Addressing concerns during the press conference, Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, the Leader of the MDP’s Parliamentary Group, emphasised that the salary adjustments were part of a broader effort to maintain a standard across all institutions. Ibrahim Shareef, Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Group, added that the equalisation aimed to benefit individuals from various classes and categories.

Dhaandhoo MP, Yaugoob Abdulla, revealed that a portion of the allocated MVR 500 million in the upcoming year’s budget, specifically MVR 90 million, is designated for salary increases for the top officials of the government.

Following the deduction of MVR 90 million for parliamentary salary increments, a balance of MVR 410 million is allocated for broader salary equalisation. This encompasses various sectors, including the military, police, customs, and civil service.

Responding to criticism, Yaugoob alleged that opposition to the salary increase from government supporters was politically motivated. He clarified that the salary changes were approved unanimously by all committee members, including prominent figures within the ruling party.

Yaugoob also addressed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s statement that he did not request salary increases for himself and other top officials. According to Yaugoob, the government had indeed submitted a request for salary adjustments for the President, Vice-President, and members of the Privatisation and Corporatisation Board.

The Committee’s decision is expected to take effect upon approval by the Parliament. The committee emphasised that the salary increases were essential to cover MPs’ expenses.
