Exploring the Depths: Mariyam Thuhufa’s Lifelong Dive into Marine Conservation

“Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated with the ocean and its incredible biodiversity,” shares Mariyam Thuhufa, a marine biologist at Siyam World reflecting on the early moments that kindled her passion for marine life. Thuhufa’s journey as a marine biologist unfolds as a testament to her enduring fascination with the ocean. 

Joining Siyam World during its pre-opening phase, Thuhufa recognised a unique opportunity to lend her expertise to a resort steadfast in its commitment to marine conservation. “I joined Siyam World as an exciting opportunity to learn and develop the beautiful house reef of the island,” she explains.

Thuhufa’s outlook on marine conservation has matured through firsthand experiences, witnessing the impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems. “It’s not just about preserving biodiversity but also recognising the importance of marine ecosystems in regulating climate and providing vital resources,” she emphasizes.

At Siyam World , Thuhufaa actively participates in initiatives ranging from coral reef restoration to education and awareness programs for guests. She also advocates for sustainable fishing practices.

Reflecting on a memorable encounter, Thuhufa shares the breathtaking experience of coming face-to-face with a rare Ornate eagle ray during a snorkeling expedition. “It was a breathtaking moment to observe this delicate creature in its natural habitat,” she recalls.

Through snorkeling and diving, she immerses herself in vibrant coral formations and encounters with diverse marine species.

Looking ahead, Thuhufa envisions a future where her aspirations contribute to understanding and protecting marine ecosystems in the Maldives.

She aims to conduct ongoing research, build collaborative relationships, engage local communities, promote sustainable tourism practices, and become an active voice for marine conservation globally.
