Shareef initially entered the political arena as a member of MDP but later shifted his allegiance to Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), where he actively participated alongside former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom in the party’s political endeavors. However, he subsequently returned to MDP.

Known for his longstanding service in the parliament, Shareef is among the parliamentarians with the longest consecutive years of service. Additionally, he has assumed the role of chairing parliamentary sittings as a senior member.
