The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) is currently undertaking a review of the concessions granted to former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is presently serving an 11-year prison sentence for bribery and money laundering.
Despite being prohibited from engaging in political activities, President Yameen established a new political party, the Progressive National Front (PNF). Concerns arose when he participated in a rally and later arrived at the party’s office to formalise his membership.
Yameen, currently appealing his sentence in the High Court, has sought additional relief from the existing restrictions, according to a statement from the Corrections Department yesterday.
The dynamics between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Yameen have soured, leading to Yameen’s departure from the Progressive Party of Maldives/People’s National Congress (PPM/PNC) on the fourth day of the current government. This move culminated in the formation of the PNF.
The legal proceedings surrounding Yameen’s case are now in their final stages within the court system. The MCS continues to assess the situation, balancing the considerations of the former president’s activities with the confines of his current legal status.
