Adam Azim, the candidate from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has emerged victorious in the race for the mayoral seat of the Male’ city.

As per results of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), Azim, the former CEO of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has taken a substantial lead in the mayoral race. With all boxes counted, Azim secured 7,621 votes.

Other mayoral candidates and their respective votes include:

  • Aishath Azima Shakoor, People’s National Congress (PNC): 5,031 votes
  • Mohamed Saif Fathih, the Democrats: 2,343 votes
  • Hussain Waheed, independent: 1,888 votes
  • Shuaib Ali (Furahani Shuaib), independent: 125 votes

The by-elections recorded a low voter turnout, with only over 17,500 out of 54,680 eligible voters participating, according to the ECM.

The election, held yesterday, witnessed voters from Male’ City selecting not only the new mayor but also representatives for three additional seats on the council – the South Maafannu seat, Central Henveiru seat, and South Henveiru seat.

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume the role of the president in November 2023.

Simultaneously, the three other seats on the council were left vacant as councilors resigned to take up positions in the new administration. These councilors are Abdulla Nasir (South Maafannu constituency), Adam Rameez (Central Henveiru constituency), and Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem (South Henveiru constituency).
