Gov’t to Initiate Research on Therapeutic Potential of Poetry for Mental Health Treatment

Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has disclosed ongoing efforts to explore the potential therapeutic benefits of Maldivian poetry for psychological treatment.

His announcement came during a ceremony commemorating Poets’ Day in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

Addressing attendees, Minister Naseer underscored the cultural and emotional significance of poetry, particularly in nurturing a sense of nationalism. He highlighted its capacity to evoke a spectrum of emotions beyond mere entertainment, citing research indicating its therapeutic value in addressing mental health concerns, a practice observed in various other nations.

Minister Naseer revealed plans for a dedicated study focusing on the healing potential of poetry for psychological conditions within the Maldives. He articulated poetry’s ability to instill courage, alleviate suffering, and promote joy as driving forces behind this exploration. Additionally, he outlined intentions to assess the efficacy of Maldivian poetry in therapeutic contexts.

In addition to these initiatives, Minister Naseer announced forthcoming renovations for the Dhivehi Language Academy, alongside President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to relocate the academy.

The ceremony also celebrated Abdulla Afeef as this year’s Poets’ Day winner, who unveiled his latest poetry collection. The event further featured book releases from various poets and presentations spotlighting the life stories of esteemed poets.
