The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced that it is taking disciplinary action against its members who defied the party’s whip during a crucial cabinet vote held on Monday.
During a press conference yesterday, Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, the leader of the MDP parliamentary group and MP for Alifushi, confirmed the party’s decision to penalize members who disregarded the party whip, in accordance with established party regulations.
Prior to the vote on the approval of cabinet nominees in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet, both the MDP and The Democrats parliamentary groups had issued a three-line whip instructing members to reject four ministers. These ministers included Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Housing Minister Dr Ali Haidar.
However, despite the party’s directive, four MDP members voted in favour of Minister Mohamed Saeed. These members are Mohamed Shifau, MP for Ihavandhoo; Jamsheed Mohamed, MP for Kulhudhuffushi South Constituency; Ahmed Haleem, MP for Bilehdhoo Constituency; and Mohamed Mumtaz, MP for Fuvahmulah South.
In response to the rejection of three cabinet members by parliament, Muizzu promptly re-appointed them on Monday.
