An emergency motion has been tabled in Parliament today, urging for the swift allocation of flats to recipients under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme whose applications have been cleared by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla submitted the emergency motion, emphasising the urgency of allocating flats to recipients in the Male’ area without further delay.
Eva underscored that housing remains a critical and unresolved issue, highlighting the publication of the permanent list of recipients for the 4,000 flats developed under the previous administration’s housing policy as a source of hope for many families. She lamented the ongoing delays in the allocation process, which she argued have resulted in hardships for numerous families living in cramped conditions.
She urged the government to expedite the allocation of flats to recipients whose applications have been cleared by the ACC under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme.
During a press briefing on Monday, ACC disclosed that 59.6 percent of individuals listed as recipients of flats under the previous administration’s ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme were deemed ineligible to receive flats. This revelation prompted the ACC to halt the issuance of flats under the scheme due to reported irregularities.
The suspension led to protests from flat recipients, but it was subsequently lifted on Thursday with the ACC instructing the Housing Ministry to enforce specific regulations during the allocation process.
The publication of the recipient list for the 4,000 flats developed by Fahi Dhiri Ulhun Corporation (FDC) in Hulhumale’ sparked public outcry over the allocation criteria, leading to 325 complaints being lodged with the ACC.
ACC revealed that some applicants on the permanent list had provided false information to qualify for flats, stating that the government would determine the appropriate course of action moving forward.
