Ecocare Maldives, an environmental organisation, has voiced apprehension regarding the proposed bridge project set to connect Hithadhoo and Hulhumeedhoo in Addu, expressing worries about its potential adverse and irreversible effects on the protected Nature Park in the region.
Highlighting the delicate balance of the area’s ecosystem, Ecocare stressed the need for careful consideration due to the significant environmental damage that could result from the construction of the bridge linking the two islands.
Advocating for a more eco-friendly approach, Ecocare proposed an enhanced ferry system as a viable alternative to the bridge, citing its potential to mitigate environmental harm.
“In light of the necessity for connectivity, we suggest exploring the option of linking Hulhumeedhoo via Gamu road if deemed essential. This approach could help mitigate the environmental impact on the protected area of Hithadhoo through robust environmental protection measures,” stated the organisation.
Emphasising the importance of inclusive decision-making, Ecocare urged the involvement of the public, environmentalists, and stakeholders in discussions concerning environmental protection. Such involvement, they argued, would promote responsible development practices and minimize environmental degradation.
Ecocare called upon relevant authorities to thoroughly assess the potential damage caused by the bridge project and explore alternative solutions to mitigate its impact on the Hithadhoo protected area.
A budget allocation of MVR 30 million has been designated in this year’s budget for conducting a survey of the Addu Bridge project, a commitment made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Abdulla Nazim, the Public Policy Secretary at the President’s Office, recently disclosed that Egypt’s The Arab Contractors Company has expressed interest in undertaking the construction of the Addu Bridge. Furthermore, during the President’s visit to China, the Addu Bridge project was presented to investors, with a Chinese company expressing interest in its development, as confirmed by the government.
