During his ongoing trip to Kolhumadulu Atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged top priority to the construction of Gaadhiffushi School’s building and associated development initiatives. In a press release published on Thursday by the President’s Office, the government made this commitment during the President’s address to residents of Gaadhiffushi Island.
In his address, the President highlighted the land reclamation project on the island, scheduled to begin this year, alongside the construction of the Kolhumadulu-Guraidhoo Airport. He also addressed feasibility concerns surrounding the construction of the island port which was initiated by the previous Administration, according to the press release.
President Dr Muizzu outlined the opportunity for Gaadhiffushi to seek jurisdiction under established guidelines, in line with the Government’s policy to incorporate uninhabited islands within the jurisdiction of island councils to bolster revenue and income streams.
The President’s Office further revealed that a meeting with the island council and WDC members of Gaadhiffushi Island was held at the island’s FENAKA office. During this session, council members voiced the developmental needs of the community, addressing issues such as space constraints at Gaadhiffushi Island School and Council Secretariat, challenges faced at the harbour, fisheries-related concerns, land scarcity, and the deepening of the harbour channel. Additionally, requests were made for ATM services, a proper waste management system, and the development of the health centre.
WDC members also urged the President to restart halted development projects on the island, a request that President Dr Muizzu assured would be addressed promptly, according to the press release.
Accompanying President Dr Muizzu on his 3-day tour of the Kolhumadulu Atoll was a high-level Government delegation.
