The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced an information session on temporary fostering, scheduled to be held at the Maldives National University (Central Auditorium) on 10th February at 8:45 pm.

The session aims to introduce interested individuals to the process of temporarily fostering children under state care, according to the ministry.

Under the current system, permanent fostering is available, granting legal guardianship of a child until they reach the age of 18. Temporary fostering involves the state entrusting the care of a child to a couple for a specified period, with a minimum duration of two years as per ministry regulations.

The move is part of  the “Ufaavehi’ program;  ‘A family for every child’  is a pledge under the administration’s Hafuthaa-14 (14-week) roadmap.

One of the primary objectives of temporary fostering is to facilitate the reunification of children with their biological families by providing support and resources to improve their circumstances. Should the situation not improve within the stipulated period, the foster family may continue caring for the child, with the option to apply for permanent legal guardianship.

Statistics reveal that there are currently 169 children under the age of 18 in state care.
