Parliament Calls for Ban on Israeli Tourists and Products over Gaza War

The People’s Majlis passed a resolution on Monday urging for measures against Israeli tourists and imports of Israeli products, citing concerns over Israel’s actions in Palestinian territories and the mistreatment of Palestinian people.

The resolution garnered majority support, with 41 members present voting in favor of the resolution during the session.

The resolution was submitted by Villingili MP Saud Hussain in October last year. Prior to its passage, the resolution underwent examination by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the parliament and was brought to the floor for discussion. 

Key provisions of the resolution include a call for a ban on Israeli citizens entering the Maldives, as well as a prohibition on the importation of goods originating from Israel. Additionally, it demands an immediate suspension of all bilateral relations between Israel and the Maldives. 

It also called for these measures to be maintained until the withdrawal of Israeli presence from Palestinian territories and the establishment of peace in the region.

This recent move echoes previous initiatives by the parliament, including a letter sent to the President’s Office in November of the preceding year, advocating for similar restrictions on Israeli citizens. 

Furthermore, the Majlis Foreign Relations Committee unanimously recommended to the President the imposition of a ban on Israeli passports.

The resolution comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Israel conducting bombings in Gaza over a period of more than three months. According to Aljazeera, more than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israel’s war in Gaza.
