The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has issued a stern warning, asserting its commitment to cracking down on any violations of electoral rights by individuals during the ongoing campaign for the parliamentary election.

In a press release, the Commission expressed concern over reports of anti-campaigning tactics and the display of banners and posters containing potentially defamatory content aimed at undermining the electoral rights of rival candidates.

Underlining the legal framework outlined in the General Elections Act, the Commission emphasised the prohibition of any activity that encroaches upon a candidate’s electoral rights or disseminates misinformation about them.

In line with these regulations, ECM urged all candidates to adhere strictly to ethical standards and refrain from engaging in any behaviour that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives has echoed these concerns, issuing a statement yesterday urging relevant authorities to take decisive action to address the issue.
