The parliament is seeking public feedback on the progress of the government in meeting the commitments made in the 2021 Climate Emergency Act.

The parliament said in an announcement on Thursday that a sub-committee of the Environment and Climate Change committee was seeking public opinion on the implementation of the law which was passed by the parliament three years ago.

It asked members of public to email any comments to the committee via their email address environment_committee@majlis.gov.mv

The Climate Emergency Act, devised to address the pressing concerns posed by climate change, establishes legal frameworks and guidelines aimed at tackling associated challenges. These encompass comprehensive climate reporting mechanisms, strategies for sustaining natural resources, measures to mitigate adverse effects, and the allocation of resources towards renewable energy initiatives.

The Act laid out plans for the Maldives to become a carbon-neutral country by 2030. To do this, it mandated the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy to submit an estimated national carbon budget for each subsequent year for parliament approval.

It also mandated the creation of an office called “Climate Change Directorate” within the Ministry to lead local efforts for climate adaptation and mitigation and the appointment of a Special Envoy for Climate Change to lead Maldives international advocacy on all matters related to climate change.
