Land Act Amended to Hand Over Binveriyaa Land in Three Months
The Parliament has approved revisions to the Land Act, which entail the government’s obligation to transfer homes and home registries within a specified timeframe to individuals who are allocated land.
The amendments stipulate that the government must transfer both the home and its registry within six months of announcing the definitive list of beneficiaries of land grants. Moreover, any homes allocated prior to the enactment of the bill must be transferred within three months following its passage.
The proposal was introduced by Glaolhu Dhekunu MP Mickail Naseem and garnered unanimous support from all 35 members present and voting.
According to the bill’s draft, the bill was proposed to find a remedy to the concerns of people who received land under the Binveriyaa scheme initiated by the previous administration but hadn’t received the land after months.
Under the Binveriyaa Scheme, land was allocated to 9,000 individuals from Hulhumale, Gulhifalhu, and Giraavaru lagoon, with permanent residents of Male’ eligible to apply. The final list of beneficiaries were published on 13th August 2023.
The Housing Ministry has confirmed that registries have been provided to over 8,000 individuals who were granted land under the aforementioned scheme.
