The Ministry of Health in the Maldives has announced plans to extend dialysis services to all atolls within the archipelago this year, according to statements made by Minister of Health Dr Abdulla Khaleel today.
In response to inquiries from Members of Parliament during a parliamentary session, Minister Khaleel outlined plans to enhance medical services available at regional and atoll hospitals. This initiative aims to ease the strain on the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male City.
Additionally, the government intends to broaden access to vital diagnostic imaging services such as MRI and CT scanning facilities across the atolls, enhancing the overall healthcare infrastructure.
Minister Khaleel highlighted specific plans to enhance healthcare facilities at key locations, including the Addu Equatorial Hospital and Regional Hospitals in Kulhudhuffushi, Raa Ungoofaaru, and Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo, Kulhudhuffushi.
Presently, dialysis services are available in the majority of regional hospitals, as well as select atoll hospitals. Within the Greater Male Area, facilities such as IGMH, Hulhumale Hospital, and Villimale Hospital currently provide dialysis services.
