The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Maldives has provided Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) with a significant boost, handing over a fleet of six vehicles, two of which are electric, to enhance waste collection efforts across the Greater Male Area.
Supported financially by The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), this donation marks a step towards bolstering sustainable practices in waste management. The vehicles were officially transferred to WAMCO during a ceremony held in March.
Mujthaba Jaleel, Managing Director of WAMCO, hailed the introduction of eco-friendly vehicles as a pivotal moment. He underscored the shared commitment to environmental conservation and highlighted the potential for collaborative efforts to drive tangible progress in sustainability initiatives.
Pek Chuan Gan, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Maldives, lauded the integration of electric vehicles into WAMCO’s fleet as a strategic move towards reducing carbon emissions and championing renewable energy adoption in waste management practices. This shift is deemed critical in steering the Maldives towards a sustainable future.
Saadia Madsbjerg, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, expressed the organisation’s dedication to nurturing a culture of sustainability that extends beyond mere recycling efforts. Notably, Coca-Cola is one of the largest producers of single-use plastics in the Maldives.
The partnership between UNDP Maldives, WAMCO, and TCCF underscores a collective commitment to address environmental challenges and advance sustainable development goals in the Maldives.
