Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has disclosed that information and pertinent data concerning more than 532 immigrants have been amassed as part of Operation Kurangi.
The minister shared these insights via a social media post. Operation Kurangi is a governmental initiative designed to confront the challenge of illegal immigration in the Maldives.
After its inaugural phase on May 2nd, Operation Kurangi commenced operations in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll. The subsequent phase of the operation involves the implementation of biometric identification procedures, targeting undocumented immigrants with the ultimate goal of facilitating their deportation through collaborative efforts with respective embassies.
Minister Ihusaan outlined intentions to concurrently extend operations to an additional five areas across the nation in the near future. Moreover, he expressed gratitude towards the Himmafushi Island Council for their unwavering support and assistance throughout the execution of the operation.
Addressing attendees during the operation’s inauguration, Minister Ihusaan elucidated the objectives aimed at resolving the illegal immigration dilemma within a three-year timeframe.
As an initial measure, he underscored the ministry’s commitment to a year-long initiative focused on collating fingerprints, photographs, and pertinent information of all foreign residents in the Maldives.
Furthermore, Minister Ihusaan emphasised that the data amassed during the operation’s initial phase is not solely intended for punitive actions against illegal immigrants. Instead, he asserted that opportunities would be extended to illegal immigrants, affording them the chance to enter the Maldives legally.
