The 19th Parliament session to be concluded on Wednesday saw a significant portion of today’s proceedings dedicated to expressions of gratitude and reflection by MPs.

Among the focal points of the session was the inclusion of “farewell” speeches by members, as per a motion presented by the Speaker. The initial address on this agenda item was delivered by MP Hussain Shaheem.

Shaheem began by extending his gratitude to the constituents who entrusted him with their representation in the 19th Parliament. Highlighting his tenure, he identified his involvement in a government land project as a notable accomplishment during his parliamentary service.

Reflecting on his parliamentary goals, Shaheem reiterated his commitment to holding the government accountable and implementing the mandates outlined in the MDP manifesto.

In her farewell address, Rozaina, who has served 15 years in parliament, emphasised her unwavering commitment to ethical conduct throughout her tenure. She affirmed that her parliamentary seat had never been subjected to any form of auction, asserting her integrity by stating she had never traded her vote within parliament or the party.

The session commenced with attendance from only 24 members, highlighting a reduced presence in the 19th Parliament, which consists of 87 constituencies but currently comprises 80 members due to seven members joining the government.

The newly elected members of parliament will take their oath of office on May 28th.

The results from the Parliamentary Election to elect the 20th Parliament of the Maldives indicate that 66 candidates who ran on the ruling party People’s National Congress (PNC) tickets have clinched their seats.

Contrary to expectations, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which held a majority in the previous parliament, experienced a notable setback, winning only 12 constituencies this time.
