The Maldives has pledged support for South Africa’s appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for additional provisional measures following recent attacks on Rafah.

In a social media statement, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasised that the international community must not remain silent as Gaza lies in ruins due to Israeli military actions. He expressed regret over the scenes unfolding in the Gaza Strip, particularly in Rafah, describing them as characterised by despair, displacement, and death.

President Muizzu called for an immediate cessation of Israel’s assaults on the Palestinian populace, urging compliance with international law and stressing the urgency for the ICJ to intervene.

Reaffirming the Maldives’ enduring solidarity with the Palestinian people, President Muizzu reiterated the nation’s steadfast support for their quest for self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He stated that the Maldives remains resolute in advocating for Palestinian statehood until it becomes a tangible reality, ensuring Palestinians can lead lives of dignity, peace, and prosperity.

South Africa recently applied to the ICJ, requesting additional provisional measures and the modification of previous measures against Israel. This request followed the latest Israeli military incursion in Rafah and an order from Israel for refugees to evacuate the area.

The new measures call for Israel to immediately withdraw from Rafah and cease its military offensive. The application also sought modification of previous provisional measures under Article 41, arguing that the existing measures are not sufficient to address the changed circumstances and new facts on which this request is based.
