Gov’t Announces New Taxi Fare Regulations for Greater Malé Area
The Transport Ministry has announced new regulations regarding taxi fares in the Greater Malé area, introducing specific fares for vehicles with seven to ten seats for the first time.
These changes, published yesterday, also include additional charges for trips to the domestic terminal and for luggage exceeding three pieces. The new regulation will take effect next Monday.

- Vehicles with Less Than Six Seats

Additional Charges
Domestic Terminal:
- Vehicles with less than six seats: MVR 10 extra to the declared fare for the distance
- Vehicles with seven to ten seats: MVR 15 extra to the declared fare for the distance
Luggage:
- An extra MVR 5 will be charged for each piece of luggage exceeding three.
An official from the Transport Ministry explained that the new fare structure addresses the previously undeclared fares for vehicles with seven to ten seats. The fares were determined after discussions with stakeholders, considering travel distance, petrol costs, and the interests of both taxi drivers and the public.
The Ministry, in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, will monitor whether taxi drivers adhere to the new fare structure. Additionally, a billboard listing the correct fares will be installed at Velana International Airport (VIA) in cooperation with Maldives Airports Company Limited.
There has been ongoing concern among consumers about taxi drivers overcharging fares beyond the rates declared by the Transport Ministry. This issue remains a significant concern in the Maldives, and the Ministry’s new regulation aims to address this problem by ensuring fare transparency and compliance.
