Fuvahmulah City Council is removing two species of non-native invasive plant species spreading in the island’s mangroves.
The City Council announced yesterday that the council has started removing “Canadian water weeds” and “Lotus” plants from it’s renowned Bandaara Kilhi mangroves, as these two species have been disrupting the natural ecosystem.
“These two species only began showing up in the mangroves two to four years ago. The spread of these alien plants affect the natural biodiversity of the mangrove,” the city council said in a post on Facebook.
The council said it was taking action because the potential decline of the water body and fish population are very likely and damaging consequences of these plants being allowed to spread.
City Council staff, in collaboration with other institutions, are actively working on the removal of these invasive plants, the Council added.
