New Academic Year Begins in the Maldives with Over 96,000 Students Enrolled
The Ministry of Education has announced the commencement of the new academic year today, with over 96,000 students enrolled in various schools across the Maldives.
According to the ministry’s statement, approximately 40,300 girls and 42,700 boys are enrolled for the new academic year. Among these, nearly 17,000 students will be attending schools in the Greater Malé Area.
The ministry also revealed that over 13,000 students from LKG to Grade 12 will be attending private schools, with more than 9,000 of them enrolled in private schools in the Malé area.
A total of 2,250 students have enrolled in Grade 1 in the Malé area, while 2,081 new enrolments were registered for other grades in Greater Malé Area schools. Additionally, 1,126 students have migrated to the Malé area from the atolls, and over 1,000 students have transferred schools within the Malé area ahead of the new academic year.
The ministry highlighted the crucial role of teachers in providing quality education and noted that a total of 12,662 teachers and educators will be teaching across the schools, including 10,729 local teachers and 1,933 foreign teachers.
In the new academic year, 162 schools will operate under a single-shift system, while 55 schools will operate with double-shifts. Furthermore, satellite education will be provided through six schools located in Fehendhoo, Fulhadhoo, Kondey, Rakeedhoo, V. Thinadhoo, and ADh. Dhidhdhoo.
In light of the current weather conditions, the ministry announced that school sessions will be limited to three hours for the first three days of the new academic year.
