The Maldivian Idol singer Shalabee Ibrahim has voiced his stance on the necessity for TV and radio stations to compensate Maldivian artists for using their works.

In a social media post, Shalabee highlighted the common practice of artists receiving royalties for their creations internationally, indicating that a similar system should be established to support the growth of artists in the Maldives.

Expressing his viewpoint, Ibrahim proposed a structured approach to compensate artists, suggesting a royalty fee of MVR 5 per play or a fixed sum for the usage of audio/video material produced by Maldivian artists on broadcast platforms.

Additionally, he emphasised that artists should be entitled to royalties even for other commercial applications, aligning with international standards.

The singer underscored the importance of implementing such measures, asserting that failure to do so could impede the progress of artists within the Maldivian creative landscape. He urged broadcasters to desist from exploiting the works of volunteer artists without due compensation, emphasising the necessity for equitable treatment.
