The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has introduced a bill in parliament proposing a ban on entry for Israeli passport holders to the Maldives.
The bill, presented by Meekail Ahmed Naseem, MDP’s MP for the South Galolhu constituency, proposes an amendment to the Immigration Act.
This bill marks the first legislative proposal submitted since the commencement of the 20th People’s Majlis.
According to the bill, Israeli passport holders, even those with an additional passport from another country, would be prohibited from entering the Maldives. The bill asserts that this measure is a response to what it describes as Israel’s ethnic cleansing and genocide against Palestinians.
The proposal also references the previous 19th People’s Majlis, which passed a motion urging action on this matter, though no definitive steps have been taken since.
Despite these public demonstrations and ongoing calls for the ban, the issue has remained unresolved, spanning changes in administration.
The current administration, led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has consistently reiterated its support for the Palestinian cause since taking office.
