The Ministry of Education confirmed that textbooks have been delivered to all schools across the Maldives following complaints from several local schools about not receiving them on time for the new academic year, which commenced last Sunday.

Earlier, some schools reported having to collect textbooks from former students to ensure new enrolments had the required materials before the academic year began. However, the Deputy Education Minister clarified that no old textbooks were distributed to schools.

Despite the Ministry’s assurance, some parents continue to report that their children have not received all the mandatory textbooks. The Ministry had previously acknowledged facing logistical challenges in delivering textbooks due to adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu mentioned that there had been a shortage of textbooks due to the expiration of the contract with the publishers.

The Ministry has stated that over 96,000 students are expected to attend schools across the Maldives this year.
