Ministry Commemorates 48th Anniversary of Guraidhoo Island’s Special Needs Home

Ministry of Social and Family Development has commemorated 48th anniversary of Guraidhoo island’s “Home for People with Special Needs”

In her address, Minister Shiham underscored the imperative of fostering a compassionate society, aligning with the vision set forth by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Emphasising ongoing efforts to enhance the centre’s services, she highlighted its dedication to delivering treatment, training, and therapy aimed at enabling individuals to integrate seamlessly into society, shouldering life’s responsibilities while maintaining dignity.

The centre presently hosts an array of programmes designed to impart social skills and foster relationships among its residents. The 48th anniversary festivities were joyously embraced by both patients and staff alike.

A spirited football tournament unfolded amongst centre employees over the past week, extending to participants undergoing treatment. Moreover, the centre underwent a rejuvenation as staff and patients collaborated in sprucing up the grounds with vibrant hues through cleaning and painting initiatives.

Minister Shiham inaugurated four vocational training initiatives, encompassing drawing, screen printing, sewing, and cooking courses, aimed at equipping individuals undergoing treatment with essential skills. Furthermore, participants of the Basic Cake Decoration Course, conducted in partnership with the Polytechnic, were lauded with certificates during the ceremony. 

Minister Shiham extended her gratitude to all personnel dedicated to serving the centre, acknowledging their invaluable contributions. Notably, 18 individuals were honoured with memorial shields for their steadfast service spanning two decades.

Central to the centre’s ethos is the commitment to uphold the dignity, happiness, and independence of every individual under its care, striving to foster inclusive and discrimination-free environments conducive to peaceful coexistence within society and familial settings alike.
