MV+ News Desk | June 10, 2024

The Parliament, now controlled by a supermajority from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), has approved three ministers in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet who were previously denied approval by the 19th Parliament, which had an opposition majority.

Previously, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) issued a whip to disapprove four of the 22 nominees proposed for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s first cabinet. Consequently, the parliament voted on 29 January to reject three ministers.

The three ministers initially denied approval were Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

In today’s voting session, Dr Shaheem and Usham received unanimous approval from all participating members, with no votes against their appointments.

However, three MDP members voted against the approval of Dr Haidar.

Despite the previous parliament’s decision, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had reappointed the three ministers to their respective posts.
