Maldives Industrial Fisheries Complex (MIFCO) has announced that the ongoing construction of the port at the Addu Fisheries Complex (AFC) in Hulhumeedhoo is progressing towards its final stages.

Initiated under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) in 2020, the project, entrusted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has seen significant developments, with approximately 85% of the work now completed.

Valued at MVR 69 million, phase one of the project primarily involves dredging the canal and constructing a 90-metre alongside jetty, aimed at enhancing the complex’s capabilities to accommodate larger vessels.

According to AFC Regional Manager Ahmed Shahid, the dredging of the AFC Export Jetty has successfully expanded its capacity to handle substantial maritime traffic. However, delays in the construction of access roads have impacted the scheduled progress of the jetty works.

AFC Operations Deputy Manager Ali Shiyaz highlighted the strategic importance of the site as a pivotal hub for purchasing, chilling, and exporting freshly caught fish.

Following a temporary suspension of dredging activities last year, reportedly due to logistical challenges, MTCC has since resumed operations with the deployment of specialised dredging equipment at the Addu City site in mid-June.
