Gov’t Seeks FIFA Advice on FAM Situation

MV+ News Desk | July 9, 2024

The Commissioner of Sports, Mohamed Tholal, has announced that the government will seek guidance from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to address the current state of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

The term of FAM’s Executive Committee (EXCO) ended on the first of July, and no new committee has been appointed. The Acting Secretary General of the Association, Mohamed Jaushan Sharif (Jau), has claimed he has been entrusted with managing FAM, though only for administrative tasks and under FIFA’s direction. However, Jaushan noted that this directive was not received through an official letter.

The lack of a valid management committee has led some to describe FAM as paralysed, unable to carry out its activities effectively. Speaking with local media outlet Mihaaru News, Sports Commissioner Tholal assured that the government plans to send a letter to FIFA today to seek their advice on how to proceed.

“We will request FIFA’s consultation for advice on how to proceed with the current situation,” said Tholal.

Tholal acknowledged the dedication of FAM’s football clubs and employees, who are working diligently to address the issues and improve the situation. He mentioned that members expressed their commitment during a recent meeting with the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu. Tholal expressed optimism about the future of football in the country.

He highlighted the recent U19 Youth Championships and the Soccer Veteran’s Academy Competition as evidence of the nation’s enthusiasm for football.

Tholal also referenced his meeting with the FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) delegation that visited the Maldives in April to assess the football situation. During a conference, he reiterated that the government will not interfere in FAM matters, as FIFA assured they would notify the government of their decision soon.

The Commissioner reiterated that the government will accept any decisions reached by FIFA and AFC regarding FAM’s management and operations.
