Parliament Tables Amendment to Bar Council Act, Excludes Attorney General
The Parliament has proposed an amendment to the Legal Profession Act to remove the Attorney General (AG) from the Executive Committee of the Bar Council.
Currently, the Bar Council’s Executive Committee consists of nine members: the Attorney General, the President, Vice President, and six additional members elected from the legal fraternity.
The proposal, presented by People’s National Congress MP Hussain Shareef, seeks to enhance the Bar Council’s independence by excluding the Attorney General from its Executive Committee.
Under the suggested changes, the Bar Council would comprise the President, Vice President, and seven other members.
Additionally, the bill addresses the authentication of documents issued by registered educational institutions and official documents intended for use abroad, which would be attested by diplomatic missions in the respective foreign countries.
Today, Parliament conducted the initial reading of the bill during its session.
