The People’s Majlis has approved amendments to the roles and responsibilities of various government ministries, which were initiated after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November.

The changes were sent to the parliament floor by the government oversight committee and were passed with a decisive majority, receiving 71 votes out of the 73 members present.

When Muizzu took office, there were 18 ministries in total. He restructured and divided the roles of several ministries, creating new ones and increasing the total number to 22.

The proposed changes were initially submitted for parliamentary approval in December. However, the proposal encountered delays at the committee stage during the 19th Parliament, which was controlled by the opposition.

Progress resumed only after the 20th parliament convened in May, following the ruling party’s overwhelming victory in the April elections.
