The United Nations Human Rights Committee has raised concerns about human trafficking in the Maldives.

In its recent findings on Maldives, the UN body drew attention to the prevalence of human trafficking and the low rates of investigations, prosecutions, and trials in the Maldives.

While welcoming the adoption of the Anti-Human Trafficking Act and the reinstatement of the national steering committee on human trafficking, the Committee recommended that the Maldives strengthen its efforts to combat trafficking in persons and forced labour and to protect trafficking victims.

The Committee was particularly concerned about sexual trafficking victims being investigated for sexual offences. It also urged the State to improve its data collection system to better evaluate the scope of trafficking and forced labour and to assess the effectiveness of the measures adopted.
