State Electric Company (STELCO) has initiated energy audits in affected homes to determine the cause of unusually high electricity bills for some households in Malé City and Hulhumalé.

In a press briefing this morning, STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy stated that 94 percent of households in Malé experienced a decrease in their electricity bills this month compared to the previous month.

However, six percent of households in Malé City and 15 percent of households in Hulhumalé have seen their bills remain significantly high.

Fahmy emphasised the need for both customers and STELCO to understand the cause of these high bills. STELCO teams have started visiting homes to conduct energy audits, examining various factors such as the condition of the premises, the types of devices in use, air conditioning systems, and the overall insulation of the apartments.

Public concern has been growing over the high electricity bills observed in recent months. STELCO acknowledged that while periodic spikes in electricity bills are common, especially during hotter months like April or during Ramadan, the sustained high level of energy consumption is a new development.

The company assured customers that billing is based on accurate meter readings and rejected claims of tampering with the power system. “We have no doubt over our billing integrity,” Fahmy asserted.

Previously, in May 2024, STELCO announced plans to rectify the issue concerning customers who settled their electricity bills prior to the government’s special discount announcement for the month of Ramadan. Additionally, STELCO has implemented reductions in electricity bills, addressing concerns raised by consumers, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s directive.
