MV+ News Desk | August 4, 2024

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory for Maldivian nationals visiting the United Kingdom, urging them to exercise caution in light of civil unrest in the country.

In a statement, the Ministry reported that the Maldivian High Commission is closely monitoring a series of activities targeting Muslims by protestors following a deadly knife attack in Southport, a town in northwest England. The attack, which took place during a dance class, resulted in the deaths of three young girls aged six, seven, and nine.

According to reports, far-right groups have been rampaging through the town, targeting shops and a local mosque based on unfounded claims that the suspect, allegedly involved in the stabbings, is a Muslim immigrant.

The Ministry has strongly advised Maldivians residing in the UK and those planning to travel to the country to remain vigilant, especially in Southport and its surrounding areas.

The Ministry further advised avoiding areas experiencing unrest and adhering to the instructions of local authorities.

Maldivian nationals in need of consular assistance are encouraged to contact the Maldivian High Commission in the UK via phone at +44 20 7224 2135 or email at info@maldiveshighcommission.org.
