Newly Elected Members Sworn into Male’ City Council
Three newly elected members of the Male’ City Council were officially sworn yesterday, following their victories in the by-elections held on 20th July.
The seats were won by Fathimath Ishana for Central Machangolhi, Shaufa Saleem for West Henveiru, and Ali Aiman for Hulhumale’, all of whom ran under the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) banner.
The by-elections were necessitated after certain City Council members were elected to parliament. The oath of office was administered by Drug Court Judge Mohamed Sameer during a ceremony at Meerumaa Hall.

Speaking at the ceremony, Male’ City Council Mayor Adam Azim emphasised the importance of teamwork among the new members to effectively address the challenges facing their constituents. He highlighted the strength of the Maldivian multi-party democracy, noting that it empowers citizens to influence decisions on issues that impact their lives.
The event also featured remarks from Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef, who underscored the government’s efforts to enhance collaboration between councils and other agencies.
Minister Shareef reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering local councils financially, aiming to reduce their dependency on the central government for addressing minor issues.
