The NDMA indicated that financial assistance will be provided to affected households following the assessment, in accordance with government guidelines. They assured that efforts will be made to complete the assessment as swiftly as possible.
The heavy rainfall on August 13 led to flooding in several islands, including the Greater Male’ Region. While the Maldives experienced 45mm of rainfall over two hours, the Maldives Meteorological Centre (MET Office) reported 80mm of rainfall on the same day. Meteorologist Hussain Waheed noted that the rain persisted for three and a half consecutive hours.
Waheed also mentioned that the MET Office expects increased rainfall during this year’s southwest monsoon compared to previous years. The rainy season is projected to continue until December, and the MET Office has indicated that it is well-prepared for the season.
