Ministry Offers Third Chance for Companies to Resolve Overdue Expat Fees
The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has granted another extension for companies to clear overdue fees and fines related to expatriate workers. The revised payment deadline is now September 16, following the original deadline of August 12 and an earlier extension to August 24.
In its latest announcement, the ministry stated businesses with outstanding amounts less than MVR 100,000 must meet the new deadline to avoid public disclosure and service suspensions via the expat system.
The ministry’s decision to extend the deadline comes in response to difficulties reported by companies in making large payments in one go.
The ministry also permits companies to establish repayment plans through the expat system to allow for more manageable payments over time.
Minister Ali Ihusan has noted that only 36% of employers meet their fee obligations on schedule out of 139,000 work permits issued.
The cabinet has also resolved to publish a list of companies that have neglected their duties regarding expatriate workers, following an earlier list detailing those with pending fees and fines.
