19 Umrah Companies Being Fined MVR 5000
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced its intention to fine 19 companies MVR 5000 for breaching regulations related to the organisation of Umrah tours.
Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, revealed that the fines would be imposed based on the severity of the violations.
Dr. Shaheem also highlighted a specific case involving a company accused of obtaining US dollars from the Maldives Monetary Authority under false pretences. The company reportedly used an Umrah licence issued by the Ministry to secure the funds but did not proceed with organising any tours.
Dr. Shaheem stated that if the allegations against the company are proven, it would face a fine of MVR 30,000. Additionally, the case will be referred to the police for further investigation.
The Minister’s remarks follow the Islamic Ministry’s decision earlier this week to fine Al-Hijra Travel Tours MVR 100,000. The company was penalised for neglecting its responsibilities towards 23 Umrah pilgrims and mismanaging their funds. The group had travelled to Mecca last month, but the misuse of funds allocated for return tickets left the pilgrims stranded.
