20,000 Imported Animals Quarantined and Disposed in 2024
Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has revealed that more than 20,000 imported animals failed quarantine inspections and were disposed of in 2024.
Data from the ministry’s Plant and Animal Quarantine Unit shows that whilst the majority of imports passed inspection, officials disposed of 19,372 fish, 1,298 birds and 39 possums after they failed to meet import requirements. An official from the ministry clarified that animals are paralysed before being incinerated for disposal per the standard guidelines.
The unit, which operates at both Velana and Gan International Airports and sea ports, cleared over 400,000 animals for entry in 2024, including 384,862 fish, 16,675 birds, 20,184 poultry and 56 pet cats.
A total 1,094 animals that were released after the required documentation was completed. This includes 499 fish, 567 birds and 28 poultry birds. 138 birds were released after testing.
Inspection officers check all plant and animal imports for signs of disease, pests, and compliance with regulations, including verification of phytosanitary certificates. Items must also be free from sand, water, and other potential contaminants.
Nearly 22,000 animals were initially held following inspection, with some later cleared and others ultimately incinerated. The measures are designed to protect the Maldives’ native flora and fauna from foreign diseases and pests.
