The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed that 27 individuals were fined during Ramadan for using electronic cigarettes and vapes.
The total amount in fines issued stands at MVR 123,000, including MVR 82,000 for the use of vapes and MVR 41,000 for possession, according to police. The enforcement follows a legal amendment banning electronic cigarettes and vapes, a decision made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 14 October last year. The amendment came into effect on 15 November.
Under the Tobacco Control Act, importing vape products into the Maldives carries a penalty of MVR 50,000. Selling vapes is subject to a fine of MVR 20,000, while a penalty of MVR 10,000 is imposed for each vape sold.
