Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has made his return to the Maldives, last night, after a medical treatment in Singapore.

Adeeb left to his medical trip to Singapore on July 11, following the approval of the Correctional Service’s Medical Board, which granted him permission to seek overseas medical evaluations unavailable within the Maldives.

During his time abroad, Adeeb’s medical furlough was extended four times before his return to the country last night.

The Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), the political party to which Adeeb is affiliated, confirmed his return on Friday night, marking the conclusion of the first phase of his medical treatment. This return occurred despite an additional extension to his medical furlough being granted just two days prior.

According to the MTD, Adeeb is scheduled to return to Singapore for the second and final phase of his treatment in October.

The MTD expressed gratitude to the government for permitting Adeeb to travel overseas for medical treatment and for the cooperation provided in facilitating his medical furlough.

Adeeb’s health concerns date back to July 5 when he was hospitalised for what the MTD described as “a serious and life-threatening neurological condition.”

This condition was reportedly diagnosed after Adeeb had spent three years in solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018.

Formerly the right hand man of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Adeeb was sentenced to a 20-year prison term in October 2020 in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement and money laundering scandal. Additionally, he received a fine of MVR 2 million.

Despite his incarceration, Adeeb had been under house arrest since 2020 due to medical grounds and a plea agreement with the State. As of now, he has not paid the imposed fines, leading the Attorney General’s Office to initiate a civil suit at the Civil Court to recover the amount.
