Adverse Weather Expected Across the Maldives from Wednesday
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has issued an advisory regarding adverse weather conditions anticipated across the Maldives from 18 December 2024 onwards.
The monsoon transition period often sees the development of low-pressure systems in the region. A low-pressure area is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal today and is anticipated to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast in India over the next two days. Furthermore, another low-pressure system is likely to develop in the far southern Maldives this week and will move westward.

The interaction of these weather systems will bring strong winds to the Maldives from Wednesday, 18 December, continuing for the following five days. Wind speeds are forecasted to reach average speeds of 17 to 27 miles per hour in the southern and central atolls and 13 to 23 miles per hour in the northern atolls.
As a result, the seas are expected to be rough in the northern atolls and very rough in the central and southern atolls. Squally thundershowers with gusts of up to 40 to 55 miles per hour are anticipated, while swell waves may also impact the south and central atolls.
MMS strongly advises all residents, particularly seafarers, to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and advisories during this period.
