Aishath Anees, Celebrated Poet, Passes Away at Age 91

Aishath Anees, known for her evocative poetry and public service in the Maldives, passed away early yesterday at the age of 91.

It is understood that she died following a prolonged illness. Anees was the wife of the late renowned singer Abdulla Hassan (Holhudhoo Abdulla), who passed away in 2021.

A gifted writer, Aishath Anees authored numerous poems, including well-known works such as “Islaahu vaan edheynama furusathu nagaanulaa” and “Oa vazan”, which have left a lasting impact on Maldivian literature.

She was among the first Maldivian women to benefit from formal education at a time when such opportunities were rare for girls. Following her studies, Anees taught Dhivehi and Arabic writing at the female branch of Madhrasathul Saniyya for approximately a decade.

Likewise, she was one of the first batch of women in the country to work in government. Her career extended into civil service, beginning with a role in the registry office established during the presidency of Ibrahim Nasir. Anees also served in various government positions, including becoming one of the first women employed at the President’s Office.

A respected figure in both literary and professional circles, Aishath Anees is remembered for her contributions to the advancement of women and the cultural fabric of the country.
